The Microsoft Windows 2008 R2 offers a couple of system improvements which aims to simplify and make admin operations a little bit easier.
Later versions of the Windows Servers have already introduced the Terminal Services feature. However, for the newer Windows Server 2008 R2, it has an improved VDI or Virtual Desktop Integration which can post a couple of advantages.
With the enhanced Virtual Desktop Integration, hosted applications are now visible on the Start menu along with the applications that were locally installed. Another benefit to this is the graphics functions with some other I/O functionalities like the mouse and keyboard which are now being handled by the desktop itself.
This feature allows for fewer server resources for every session making the available resources used more efficiently.
One of the latest features introduced in the Windows Server 2008 R2 is the Branch Cache. This is made based on the idea of users working in branch offices that often have to access certain files that are being stored in the remote file servers. Since a lot of enterprises pay for WAN bandwidth, they use every time they access these files, using servers can become expensive.
However, with the Branch Cache feature, files are cached on the local server which doesn’t require for data to be remotely accessed except for when a specified file has already changed. This reduces the bandwidth costs as well as improve the performance of users in the branch office.
Windows Server 2008 R2 has a Hypervisor Technology through the Hyper-V which is redesigned to take up to a total of 32 logical processors. It also has certain improvements from its predecessors such as the Live Migration feature which can allow you to move the virtual machines in between hosts without any downtime.
It also comes with a feature that allows for an additional hard drive to be used in the virtual machine without needing to reboot the virtual machine itself.
Third party backup applications are often required for large organizations but for smaller organizations, the Windows Server Backup or the previously called the NTBACKUP is being used. In the rebuilt version that was released in the Windows Server 2008, the results weren’t quite as impressive as had been initially presumed.
However, this issue is one of the features that has been modified and improved in the Windows Server 2008 R2.
The Microsoft Remote Desktop Web Access or RD Web Access is the Remote Desktop Services feature of the Windows Server 2008 R2 which allows access to the RemoteApp and the Desktop Connection using the Web browser of the Start menu.
This also includes the Remote Desktop Web Connection which allows for remote connection to the desktop of a computer which has a Remote Desktop Access.
