The Ribbon Interface from Office 2010 remains on the newer Microsoft Office 2013, and it provides users a familiar organization. However, there are also updates on the Ribbon menus like the buttons which are now much larger and spaced out to make it easier to access the controls with a touch of a finger.
Embedding content from the internet into the documents is easier with the Insert feature in Office Word 2013. This allows you to search for photos and videos online using Bing and embed the codes into the documents.
The Insert option also makes it easier to embed screenshots in the documents. The screenshot button within the Insert option will produce a window with thumbnails. You can click the image you want, and it will be immediately placed on the screen. You can also move the photos and videos wherever you want.
The Touch Control feature for the Home and Business edition of Microsoft Office 2013 gives access to a touch control along with using a keyboard and a mouse. This is specifically helpful when running Office 2013 on mobile phones and tablets.
The email view of the Outlook 2013 looks similar to the Windows 8 Metro mail app where the unread emails are highlighted in blue and currently selected emails are highlighted in dull gray. The ribbon Interface can also be tucked away when it is not needed.
Outlook 2013 also has an Inline Replies feature when the Reading Pane is open. This allows you to reply to a certain message from the Reading Pane itself. It also features the notification system from Windows 8 which gives new message alerts with a pop-up found at the top corner of the computer screen.
Other mail features of the Outlook 2013 include the Site Mailboxes, calendar, and task list for a whole team working on a particular project, and the Exchange-based feature which allows you to have a shared mail folder.
The Calendar feature has the Metro-inspired element of a new navigation menu. It creates a pop-up which has details of forthcoming appointments and a mini Calendar on the right side of the screen.
There is also a new bar in the Calendar feature that marks the time and day in addition to a mini weather forecast embedded in the Calendar view.
The People feature is new in Outlook 2013, and it replaced the Contacts option in the menu. The contacts are combined from your address books and social services such as LinkedIn. This also automatically pulls in photos of your contacts from their social networks.
The To-Do bar feature within Outlook on the right side of the window also allows you to add Favorite People where you can easily view free members.
The shape creation tools feature of the PowerPoint 2013 is simplified but extended. It now allows you to directly draw photos from online sources such as Office.com, Bing, Clip Art, Facebook, Flickr, and SkyDrive.
The collaborative tools feature has also improved in PowerPoint 2013. It can produce comments on the slides where others can also reply. The Presenter View mode also allows users to edit slides even during presentations.
The Microsoft Office 2013 for Home and Business edition has Cloud features which give users the ability to open and save documents right into the Cloud through Microsoft SkyDrive service.
It also includes a built-in flexibility against internet connections that are unstable. Office 2013 can temporarily save documents on the local disk and sync it with SkyDrive once the internet connection comes back.
