The Microsoft Office 2011 for Mac Home and Student version includes Microsoft Office Word for Mac, Excel for Mac, PowerPoint for Mac, and Messenger for Mac.
The Microsoft Office 2011 for Mac Home and Student edition features the Ribbon interface. It helps minimize the time that users spend digging through menus. With the Ribbon interface, each program now has a row of tabs on the top. Navigating through different workspaces has never been easier.
Microsoft Office 2011 has made it easier to edit multimedia in the Office documents on Mac computers. It has a unified interface through all the applications with neat tabs for every category. Artistic filters also make it easier to add and edit photos.
The real-time editing and co-author features of the Microsoft Office 2011 are also welcomed pretty well. It can easily track someone who is actively working on a certain document, and it also allows more than one people to view and edit a shared document.
Collaboration is also made easier because people can edit the same document at the same time.
This also allows you to communicate through voice, IM, or video chat for as long as there is Messenger or Communicator for Mac.
The web applications for Microsoft Office are now in the Microsoft Office for Mac as well. This includes Google Documents which is a web-based version of the Microsoft Office Word, Excel, and PowerPoint which allow real-time edits.
Documents can also be saved in Skydrive, a Microsoft cloud storage site which is free for those who have a Windows Live ID.
Aside from the feature of the older Microsoft Office where you can add and edit photos in Word, with the 2011 version, you can work in a full-screen mode. It also features a publishing layout to give a real-life sense of how a certain document will look like when printed.
With the full-screen mode feature, you have a wider view of the columns, and you can see pages side by side. There are new Visual Styles on the size and font of bullets and headers, and you can also preview the changes before they are made. There are also more templates and themes with a Spotlight search feature where results are immediately highlighted.
The Spreadsheets for Office 2011 for Home and Student version for Mac feature Pivot Tables. This simplifies very long and detailed number databases. With the Pivot Table feature, you can create smaller and easier-to-read tables which can appear either on a new sheet or on the same sheet as the data.
However, if you don’t want to use the Pivot Tables, Excel 2011 also features new filtering tools where you can hide the cells, rows, and columns that are irrelevant.
Office 2011 also features the Sparklines which was first introduced in Office 2010. It allows you to add small charts into the spreadsheet itself to combine the raw data and the visual explanation together. This feature creates an easy way to produce visual comparisons.
PowerPoint 2011 features broadcast slideshows where you can send a link of presentations to as many people. They can then view the presentation in various devices.
Sharing the presentation is easy, but you will also need a Windows Live ID. The recipient of the link can view it with just a browser and internet connection; no PowerPoint installation is needed.
Microsoft Office 2011 has also added some new transitions and animations to its PowerPoint 2011. It includes some subtle fade-ins and various entrances and exits. You can also directly embed videos into the presentation, and the Reorder Objects feature allows the viewing of multiple layers as a 3D fan so you can stack them into order easily.
